Importance of teaching good poem : 'To the daughter leaving home'

The more needs for whole-person education is required in our society, which insist students have to develop not only their intellectual ability, but also affective characteristics, the more teaching literature such as poems, literatures is being important. To meet the need in the society, it is significant to use good literary work. The work has to be educational, familiar and easy to be taught. As one of the most appropriate works for teaching high school students, I would like to recommend ‘To a daughter leaving home’.

First, the contents of this poem is educational and good for developing student’s affective characteristics. Basically this poem is describing the affection of parents in the point of view of mom. Because students have never been parents, it is crucial to drive them have a think of how their parents are thinking. In this sense, this poem is useful to give them a chance trying to look into how the parents are feeling and thinking towards their children. It could help students develop their empathy. Also they might increase their understanding ability by having a think of their parent’s mind.

Second, the contents of this poem are familiar with students. Except for few students who lost their parent, or those who have never lived with their parent in since early age, most of the students are supposed to have experience concerning their family. Maybe, something just happened right before coming to class, because of waking them up or and having a breakfast stuff. These familiarity makes student approach this poem comfortably and do some activity teacher giving them actively

Lastly, in terms of pedagogical view, it is easy to activate their schema. To draw attention of student's interest and make them have self-awareness and responsible for their study, it is important to lead them actively participate in what they are taught. If the students have background knowledge or outline about what they are learning, they will be able to be trying to be understanding through schema. An array of they are doing like structuring and restructuring the original meaning through schema helps them take part in the lesson actively and this student-centered lesson leads student to have self-awareness of studying.

          To sum up, teaching literature is crucial for whole-human teaching, and it requires proper literary work. The poem ' To the daughter leaving home' is considered good content of teaching them. This is because it is educational, easy to teach sympathy  and helpful for student to have self-awareness in what they are learning.
